Kilnsey, Wharfedale & surrounding areas
Kilnsey is well known for its Crag, a massive limestone outcrop
scoured out by the Wharfedale glacier during the Ice Age. The
Crag itself is almost 170 feet high at its summit, with an overhang
of 40 feet at the top. Springs gush from its rock face to form
a clear beck which runs alongside the road on its way to join
the Wharfe.
Mastiles
Lane from Kilnsey is an historic drovers road, much used by
the monks from Fountains Abbey between the 12th and 16th centuries
when Kilnsey was the centre of their million acre Wharfedale
estate.
The century-old Kilnsey Show is one of the largest agricultural
shows, and it features a fell race up the Crag and back. |
